Adventures in Friendship

I had tea/coffee with a friend yesterday. And, I’ll admit, we seem like an odd pair. She’s an introvert. I’m an extrovert. She is an academic. I am not. She relies on her thoughts. I lean into my feelings. She is purposefully cautious. A risk here and there is wonderfully acceptable to me. To some, she is unapproachable. I am told, I am inviting. So, what’s my point?

Well, in a world where we humans gravitate toward like-minded and like-being folks - I admit it is not always a free-flowing conversation when we get together. Sometimes, I have to ‘work’ at it. But, know this, I treasure her friendship. No, we are not ‘sisters from another mister,’ but she has my heart. And, I know, without a doubt, I could call on her if I ever found myself in a ‘situation.’ And in a culture where many have more Facebook friends than face-to-face friends, it is fabulous knowing she has my back.

And besides, surrounding myself with those who look like me, talk like me, think like me, act like me – good grief, that is the epitome of boring to me. Where is the adventure if all you do is hang out with you, or surrogates of you?!?

So, here’s the challenge – Name one person, who is not like you, but who you can honestly call a face-to-face friend. If you have one, you are blessed. If you do not, consider reaching out and expanding your horizon. It’s a tricky proposition, but there’s a very good chance you will be the richer for it.
