An Argument for Average

When did average become a ‘bad’ word? When did receiving a “C” in a class become synonymous with failure? Because here’s a short version of the definition of average. It is a number expressing the central or typical value. And typical means the norm, the standard, the expected. Many live in the comfortable, the ordinary, the customary, the traditional, the prevailing. And that’s exactly where they like it. But when it comes to defining themselves, average can be considered an insult. Go figure.
First off, average is just that – average. Try not to attach too much emotional baggage to it. Let’s face it, most of us are average, and that is a beautifully wonderful thing. For if we were all the visionaries, the innovators, the enterprising, who would be the implementers, the maintainers, the preservers, the supporters, the sustainers, the guardians?

Both have equal value. And here’s the kicker. Average gets the job done. Go Average!
