Ugh! How could I be so stupid! What was I thinking! I should know better! Sound a little familiar?
Take a beat and remember that when it comes to things we label as mistakes, that was not the intention. We weren’t looking to do something we would later regret. At that precise moment, we did the best we could, given the information we had, the beliefs we held, our perceptions at the time, and so much more. These ‘mistakes’ were simply choices we made (consciously or unconsciously) which we are now reassessing via the rearview mirror.
When we take a second glance at the past, with today’s new

level of awareness and amassed acumen, it’s easy to think we made a regretful choice. But, again, not really, given where we were at the time the decision was made. We did the best we could at that time.
Only the present offers us the grace to choose our next step. We cannot erase our pasts, so we carry them into our present and future. With that carrying forward, we can find hope.
