Cross Over

For a country that has “United” in its name, it feels like we have never been so divided, and the path forward towards any sense of common ground or unity feels, for many, more uncertain than it has ever been. Almost 60% of US adults find conversations across these differences stressful and frustrating, according to Pew Research in 2021.
And as stressful as this can be, leaning into these sometimes-difficult connections and conversations might be exactly what we need more of right now. Because finding ways to connect across differences is how we learn and grow.
One of the most effective ways to assist us in our learning and growing is to consider building a network of individuals who broaden our perspectives and increase the diversity of opinions.
There is actually a word for this specific type of network – a challenge network. The goal is to increase the number of voices, the number of opinions, challenging our assumptions, beliefs and perspectives.
So, the challenge is to, ahem, create a challenge network (pun intended). This will require you to get to know an individual, as opposed to leaning into any assumptions you may have about them. Ask questions of the other. Don’t assume you know the answers. Listen to learn, grow and build relationship. Offer and accept feedback with grace and humility.

Yes, it’s easier to surround ourselves with people who always agree with us. But consider crossing over to the other side. Not to necessarily change your mind, but maybe to expand it. And with a bit more listening and a bit more openness to learning, we can get a little closer to this idea of unity we hold so dear.
