Eye Candy

My sister, Nat, says that sometimes you just need to take a picture with your eyes. And the more I think about it, the wiser her words become. Noodle on this one. We have these lovely little cameras (aka cells) always at the ready. You see something confusing, unsettling, breathtaking, funny…and without thinking you click. It is saved in your phone. And then what?

It takes up space on this tiny device.

Sure. You share it with your 500 closest friends on social media. You may glance at it a couple of times. Then that’s it. Forgotten. Nothing memorable. And when you do remember that it is there, you thumb through an inordinate number of forgettable pictures, attempting to locate it. If the stars are in alignment and Pluto is in retrograde you may find it before boredom sets in (yours or the person you want to show it to).

Before your trigger-happy self goes click, take a little time to really look at what you are about to memorialize. You may find it really isn’t worth it. Or maybe, just maybe, you will create a memory in your mind that is so unforgettable you find yourself pulling it up over and over again, for decades. Eliciting emotion as you remember what you truly saw. Being human.

Take a picture with your eyes. Sage advice, my sister. Sage advice.
