Let's Get Emotional

Emotions are healthy. All Emotions. Even the ones that don’t feel so fabulous. They are healthy because they serve a purpose, and they have consequences.
Think about a recent challenging emotion. One you wish you weren’t experiencing. As you think about it, recognize that “negative” emotions are our motivators for change. If you are feeling unfulfilled at work, you might consider looking for a new job. Or, if you’re bored with your workout routine, you might think about switching it up a bit.
Now, think about those ever-so-delicious feelings. The ones you wish you could sit in FOR-EV-ER. These “positive” emotions are the ones psychologists call an “upward spiral” to wellbeing.
Since “positive” and “negative” emotions, each, have value, the secret sauce is to find the balance between feeling “good” and feeling “bad.” So, what is that balance?
According to Dr. Barbara Fredrickson who created the “positivity ratio,” there is a beautifully balanced ratio of positive to negative, and the ratio is 3:1. For every 1 “negative” emotion, having 3 “positive” emotions broadens our minds to see all the possibilities as well as builds resilience and achievement.
With that being said, here’s your challenge for the day, if you so choose to accept: Take a day to pay attention to the emotions you are feeling. Beware: You may see there are a heck

uva lot of them. Name these emotions. Feel these emotions in the moment. You don’t have to stay there for an extended period of time, but don’t bypass them. This may be your first step into finding your balance when it comes to your emotions. A balance that keeps you moving forward in a healthy manner.
