Penance vs. Forgiveness

Penance is a voluntary self-punishment as an outward expression of showing remorse for having done/thought something not seen favorably by yourself and/or others. And let’s put it out there – it is a very ‘religious’ word. But beyond the religiosity of the word, far too many of those who do not even have a faith tradition self-punish when it probably is not needed.

Now, the yearning to make amends and set things straight can be a healthy way to move forward. But maybe a bit of forgiveness of self is all that is really needed. We can do this by reflecting and being aware of the action or thought. Do this without judgement or fear. From there we can choose to accept the situation for what it is or is not, as well as accept the role we did or did not play. Do this without judgement or fear. And then move on. Choose how you wish to respond now and the next time. Do this without judgement or fear.

No matter what – you get to choose what is right for you – Penance or Forgiveness…. or maybe a bit of both. Either way, make the choice from a place of love.
