Nobody knows what the future holds. Sorry, all my clairvoyants, seers, mystics, prophetess’, diviners, and soothsayers. You are in a category all your own. Today, I’m speaking to those who don’t possess the gift of foretelling. So, let’s start again.
Nobody knows what the future holds. Except those cumbersome little thought distortions in our heads that tell us a story or two that may not necessarily be true. Sure. It’s easy to think that we will know what will happen in the future, how we’ll respond to xyz, which obstacles we’ll have to drag our butts over, what challenges will plop right in front of us and get in our way.
And these are the distortions that keep us from taking action, moving toward the goal, since we already seem to think we know how the story will end. But, news flash, we don’t. Nope. Nope. Nope.
Study after study has proven that humans (other than the beforementioned) stink, and stink big time, when it comes to predicting the future. We believe we know the outcome, but truth be told, there are thousands of paths, zigs, and zags, that lead to an amazingly large number of possibilities.
So, every time you find yourself attempting to predict the future, get back to the here and now. Bring your thoughts to the present moment – the exact situation you find yourself in, right now.
Upon your return to present day, think up three alternative outcomes. More if you are up for it. Because seeing the possible outcomes allows you to fly on that multiple-laned freeway, instead of on the one dirt, side road. You’ve got multiple lanes, with multiple exits, which means multiple destinations. You’re the driver. And the open road awaits. Road trip, anyone?
