Rules

Confession time: I don’t cook. My husband is the culinary genius in our home when it comes to our daily meals. Thank goodness. Where I add to the gastronomic delights is in baking. Love, love, love it.

This week, I’ve been wrapping my nugget around epicurean yumminess with the theme of all things pumpkin. It was a lesson in visual overload as I travelled throughout the internet looking for the ‘perfect’ Fall recipes. And, I must say, folks have gotten pretty creative and imaginative with their baked goods.

But here’s something I’ve learned. Sometimes it is better to follow a new recipe to the ‘t.’ Meaning, if you are in uncharted territory, it could prove helpful to see how someone else goes about creating the dessert. Understand the choices the food artist has made. Learn from what they have done. Respect the process.

From there, go crazy. Make it your own. Put your own bit of magic into it. Or, better yet, create something completely new based on what you have learned.

As in baking, life is a process. It is about thinking, investigating, creating and understanding. So, before you decide to break the rules, how about learning them first. Having basic understanding goes a long way when you are charting new maps.
