Running Behind

Running Behind

Have you ever heard the saying, “If you are early, you are on time. If you are on time, you are late. And, if you are late…?” Well, I’ll let you fill in the blank on the ramifications of being tardy. Some folks really lean into this idea. They strive to leave a little early to make sure they are rarely if ever, delayed. In fact, it’s extremely uncomfortable for them to be even 5 minutes behind schedule. There are probably a go zillion motivations behind the desire to be punctual. All of them – perfectly lovely.

There are some who follow an exact “formula of timeliness” with the events in their lives. Again, perfectly lovely. But that extreme focus on punctuality might require that they miss out on some of the good stuff that life can surprise them with.

Don’t misunderstand. Goals are wonderful. They get us from where we are to where we want to be in a timely fashion. But, sometimes, maybe sometimes, we miss the joy of the process if we are laser-focused on the due date.

Something to consider: When you find yourself pushing to meet a deadline that may not require such a strident end date, take a second and reflect on why. Because you just never know – Late may end up being right on time.
