The Bar

Rarely is setting a high expectation for yourself considered a radical move. It may actually be the way you move through the world. And that is perfectly lovely, until it isn’t. When these elevated expectations cut into a healthier you, it may be time to cut yourself a bit of slack.

Reflect back on a time when the goals you had set for yourself did not allow for less than stellar days. How did you respond? How did it affect your overall well-being?

If you found it had you in a less than healthy emotional state, it could be that the bar was set too high. A possible solution is to consider resetting the bar each day. How high the bar is placed will depend on what is going on with you on that particular day. Ask yourself, “Where am I emotionally?” “What about physically or mentally?” Based on your answers, you can then set the bar, appropriately.

And when someone asks how you are doing with x, y or z, you stand a really awesome chance of saying I am at 100%, popping on all cylinders, because you have set the bar for the specific day ahead.
